YEAR IN REVIEW... Injuries plagued the 2007-08 Storm squad early on in the season, but strong play in the latter half of the year earned them a fifth place finish in the Western Conference and helped solidify a playoff birth for a league high 17th consecutive season.
In the playoffs, the Storm faced off against their conference rivals, the London Knights, in the first round series. Strong goaltending by Thomas McCollum and fantastic individual play by defenceman Drew Doughty lifted the Storm over the Knights four games to one. Moving onto the Greyhounds in the second series, the Storm came out strong winning the opening game 4-1. Nevertheless, the Soo would eventually prevail, winning the next four games and taking the series four games to one.
The 2007-08 season ended on a positive note as Storm defenceman Drew Doughty, with another impressive year on the blue line, earned himself the Max Kaminsky Award for Most Outstanding OHL defenceman. With this honour, Drew becomes the first Storm defenceman in team history to achieve this award.
Guelph Storm history was made this year in Ottawa at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft on June 22nd. For the first time in team history, two Guelph Storm players were selected in the first round of an NHL draft. Defenceman Drew Doughty was selected second overall by the Los Angeles Kings while his teammate Thomas McCollum was selected with the final pick of the first round, 30th overall, by the Detroit Red Wings. Doughty's selection sets another team milestone as the 18 year old becomes the highest ever NHL drafted player to wear a Storm uniform since Jeff O'Neill was drafted 5th overall by the Hartford Whalers in 1994.
A number of changes occurred during the off-season of 2007-08. General Manager/Head Coach Dave Barr left the Storm after 5 years with the team to join the NHL ranks as an Assistant Coach with the Colorado Avalanche. Stepping up to take his spot as Head Coach was former Associate Coach/Assistant General Manager Jason Brooks. Also hired on was former two time Storm captain Chris Hajt. Hajt was hired as Assistant Coach to replace the vacancy left when Jason moved up to Head Coach.
