For a rave review of new Guelph Storm defenceman Daniel Maggio you need look no further than his new/old teammate Chris Van Laren.
Van Laren was a teammate of Maggio’s for the better part of three seasons with the Sudbury Wolves. Van Laren came to Guelph in a trade last season, Maggio landed in Guelph in exchange for draft picks on Monday.
“Dan’s one of those guys you love to have as a teammate but hate to play against,” Van Laren said Wednesday after the first day of on-ice activity at the Storm’s training camp.
“He works hard every single day and every single night and he leaves his ego at home. He’s just a great team guy. We’re all ecstatic that we have him here,” said Van Laren.
He added that Maggio is a player who plays with a “fearless edge” and will “stand up for anybody.”
The Storm had been trying to acquire the 6-foot-3, 202-pound Windsor native since last season. They were one of several suitors that made offers to Sudbury this summer after Maggio requested a trade.
“I asked for a trade earlier in the summer then spent all summer just thinking about it,” Maggio said.
“I’m glad it was to here. I’m very excited. I like that it’s a winning team and that we’re all focused on the main goal, which is winning the Memorial Cup. You can see how much that goal is focused on from the minute you get in this building.”
The 19-year-old Maggio didn’t see much point in sticking with the rebuilding Wolves this upcoming season. He had spent his entire three-year career there since being the seventh overall pick in the 2007 OHL draft.
