Storm Tracks - Regular season wrap-up

Comment Below

With the Storm's 2009-10 regular season coming to a close on Saturday with their 3-0 road win in Owen Sound, Storm Tracks takes a look back at a few notable achievements from the past season.

A TALE OF TWO SEASONS... After most OHL pre-season prognosticators picked the Storm to finish near the top of the Western Conference, there's few that would dispute the suggestion that Guelph's regular season was disappointing as of early January.  With the return of goaltender Brandon Foote from hip surgery and the passing of the OHL's trade deadline, the team was among the league's best beginning January 9th.

'Beck-tacular' season... With 93 points, Taylor Beck finished fourth overall in OHL scoring.  Beck's Top 10 finish makes him just the second Storm player to finish among the ten best since 1996-97 when Todd Norman finished sixth in the league. Marty St. Pierre is the only other Guelph player to accomplish the feat in the last 13 years finishing third during his overage season in 2003-04.  Beck also becomes the first 18 year-old to finish Top 10 since Jeff O'Neill did it in 1994-95. Also notable, Beck picked up a point on 38.4% of the Storm's goals this season - 2nd only to Tyler Seguin of Plymouth who scored or assisted on 43.2% of his club's tallies.

Pointing to Points per game... With the injuries suffered by Storm leading scorers Taylor Beck, Peter Holland and Michael Latta, it's no surprise that the three ranked high among all OHL players in points per game this season.  In fact, the threesome each ranks among the top 16 players in the league in the category (Beck 4th, Holland 12th, Latta 16th).  Interestingly, 12 of the top 16 spots in points per game are actually owned by players from just four teams - Windsor (1, 6, 10), Kitchener (5, 7, 8), Erie (11, 14, 15) and Guelph.

Thank you Sportsnet... Without question, one of the factors in the Storm's turnaround was the improved play of Peter Holland.  Prior to January 17th, the Anaheim Ducks 1st round pick had 32 points in 33 games (10/22).  On January 18th, in front of a nationally televised audience on Rogers Sportsnet, Holland busted out with four goals and never looked back.  In his last 26 games, the Caledon native racked up 20 goals and 28 assists for 48 points.

GP G A Pts +/- PIM PP SH FG GW
Holland (before Jan. 17) 33 10 22 32 -19 26 2 0 2 0
Holland (after Jan. 17) 26 20 28 48 12 14 7 2 5 3

New Year's resolution... to score more... Much like the fortunes of the Storm and linemate Peter Holland, forward Michael Latta also saw his season make a dramatic turn in January.  Latta was playing at a point per game pace through 26 games having suffered an injury that sidelined him for most of November.  After going without a goal in December, the St. Clements native scored 24 goals in January, February and March to rise up the OHL leading scorers list.  Even more impressive, Latta notched 23 goals in 26 games between January 8th and March 11th.

Foote first... Early this season, it was questioned whether goaltender Brandon Foote would see any action in 09-10 after hip surgery in the Fall.  Not only did he return to the Storm lineup... he never left it during a stretch that saw him start 29 straight games after his return on January 8th.  The Whitby native finished the season with a 20-8-1-0 record sparking the club's remarkable turnaround.

Sometimes, the best deals are the ones that aren't done... Not to be overlooked, 19 year old Mathew Sisca made his way into league's top scorers list to finish 34th with a scoring surge that began soon after he was reportedly almost dealt. After coming to the Storm in an off-season trade with Niagara, Sisca stumbled early, picking up just 17 points in his first 30 games and owning a team-worst -21 plus/minus rating.  In his last 38 games, the Woodbridge native showed the scoring touch that the Storm were hoping for when they acquired him racking up 25 goals and 23 assists for 48 points to go along with a +13 plus/minus.
