Storm's Sparks turns back WhalersMar 24, 2012 - 07:23 GMT

By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury - A little bit of luck, a lot of hard work and a huge dose of Garret Sparks proved to be a winning formula for the Guelph Storm Friday night.
A weird goal in the second period helped Guelph take a 3-0 lead early on and Sparks made 45 saves as the Storm downed the Plymouth Whalers 4-2 in Game 1 of their best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final.
Game 2 goes Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in Guelph.
The home crowd is never more important than do-or-die games in the playoffs... and Round One Rush is back so that fans can pack the Sleeman Centre and cheer their Storm into the second round! Tickets are available on Saturday, March 24 in person at the Guelph Storm box office from 10 am - 2 pm or by calling or visiting Ticketmaster (CLICK HERE).

The Storm built up a 3-0 lead by the game’s midway point then weathered the Whalers’ comeback attempt, thanks mainly to Sparks.
“That’s what I have to do in games like that. When things get hectic it’s up to me to hold it together,” said Sparks, who had family up from Illinois to watch the game.
He saved his best for last. With the Storm forced to kill off a double minor to Andrey Pedan midway through the third period, Sparks made six or seven break-out-the-thesaurus saves to preserve a 3-2 lead. He was there again when the Whalers pulled goaltender Scott Wedgewood for the extra attacker, holding the fort until Francis Menard iced the win with an empty netter.
“Sparksy was amazing and the guys skated their butts off,” Storm coach Scott Walker said.
“It’s easy to lose, but it takes hard work and commitment to win, and they worked hard tonight. I’m proud of them,” Walker said. “They’re tired and banged up and bruised, but that’s what it takes to win.”
