One night after dropping the Attack 6-1 in Guelph, the Storm travelled to Owen Sound, where Joey Hishon scored on the powerplay in extra time with a one-timer to hand the Storm a 3-2 overtime loss.
After falling behind 2-0 with single goals in the first and second by the Attack, the Storm would score on the powerplay in the middle stanza before tying the game at two early in the third.
The back end of a home-and-home series, emotions ran high in the first period with a pair of altercations at the 12:13 mark of the first period resulting in game misconducts to Cody McNaughton and Garrett Wilson. The Attack would jump out to a 1-0 lead on the ensuing powerplay on a brilliant individual effort by Hishon beating the Storm defence with a nifty deke then backhanding it past Brandon Foote. Owen Sound fired 10 shots on Brandon Foote in the Guelph goal in the opening twenty while Stajcer was perfect on eight Storm attempts.
The Attack would double their lead to 2-0 early in the second after Marcus Carroll jumped on a rebound off a Michael McGurk point shot. Up two and with momentum on their side, the Attack would quickly find themselves down a man for at least four minutes after Hishon was handed a double minor for spearing only 31 seconds after the Carroll goal. After former Storm winger Grant McGee picked up a high sticking penalty, Taylor Beck would make the Attack pay on the five-on-three. Playing the point on the powerplay, Beck would take a cross ice pass from Comrie sliding in to the top of the circle and wristing it past Stajcer for his 28th of the year. With the extended five-on-three and two more powerplays later in the second, the Storm outchanced and outshot the Attack, firing 15 on Stajcer compared to eight for Owen Sound.
Trailing by one heading into the third, the visitors would open the period down a man and only 37 seconds in Owen Sound's Hishon was awarded a penalty shot after a Storm defender handled the puck in the crease. Foote would turn aside Hishon's attempt to keep his team within one. After trailing for over 27 minutes, Guelph finally managed the equalizer on Peter Holland's 19th of the year from Zack Mitchell. After Mitchell outraced the Owen Sound defence for a loose puck, Holland would come out of a scrum with the puck along the side boards and beat Stajcer with a wrist shot from the hash marks. Both teams had their chances to grab a third period lead, but the play of the period may have been a late penalty call against Guelph giving Owen Sound a powerplay to open overtime. After clearing the puck with less than 20 seconds remaining in Conor O'Donnell's holding minor, Owen Sound would regain the Storm zone and after faking a one-timer from the point, Jesse Blacker slid the puck to Hishon at the top of the circle who wasted little time firing it past Foote for the winner.
Guelph will stay away from the Sleeman Centre for their next three games with their annual swing through Eastern Ontario beginning Friday night in Kingston. Saturday night Guelph visits Belleville before heading to Ottawa for a Sunday afternoon start. The Storm's next home game will be Wednesday, February 10th at 7 pm when Tyler Seguin, the #2 rated prospect for the NHL draft and the Plymouth Whalers visit the Sleeman Centre for a 7 pm start. It’s a ‘Wecession Wednesday’ game with all regular tickets just five dollars. Tickets available by calling or visiting the Storm box office or online at guelphstorm.com.
