During the weekend of June 25-26th at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, young hockey players from all over the globe will hope to fulfill a lifelong dream of being drafted to the NHL. Leading up to the draft, GuelphStorm.com will revisit the past 16 NHL Entry Drafts beginning with the 1993 draft reviewing the many Storm players that have been grabbed by NHL clubs and where their professional careers would take them.
Last year’s draft in Montreal was arguably the best in Storm history. Five players were drafted by NHL teams in 2009 with Peter Holland going the highest to the Anaheim Ducks. Holland became the ninth Storm player in the last 17 NHL Entry Drafts to be selected in the first round. The Caledon, Ontario native was scooped up by the Anaheim Ducks with the 15th pick.
After Holland was selected, four different Storm players were chosen in the next 61 picks. Beginning with the selection of winger Taylor Beck 70th overall to the Nashville Predators. Like Beck, Michael Latta was taken in the 3rd round by the Nashville Predators (72nd overall). The Atlanta Thrashers picked big blueliner Ben Chiarot with their 4th round selection (120th overall).
Matt Kennedy would be the last Storm player chosen. The Carolina Hurricanes selected the former Storm captain in the 5th Round (131st overall).
Holland, Beck and Latta returned to Guelph for the 2010 season. Both Latta and Holland battled injuries early on, but finished the season strong putting up personal best numbers. Beck had an outstanding year finishing first in team scoring and fourth in League scoring with 93 points. The St. Catharines native was named the Storm’s MVP.
Chiarot was traded to the Sudbury Wolves at the trade deadline and Matt Kennedy finished off the season with the Barrie Colts after being dealt in December. Turning down an offer from the Hurricanes to start the 2009-10 season, Kennedy recently signed a three year entry level contract with the team.
