Sparks shines in second straight shutout

Storm netminder Garret Sparks extended his shutout streak to over 125 minutes in a 6-0 road win over the Windsor Spitfires.

Storm netminder Garret Sparks extended his shutout streak to over 125 minutes in a 6-0 road win over the Windsor Spitfires.  Six days after a 5-0 whitewash at the hands of the same Spitfires at the Sleeman Centre, the Storm gained a measure of revenge with a blanking of their own that saw six of the ten forwards that dressed for the contest pick up two points.

It was a game where excuses would have been easy to find with two of the Storm's top forwards on the shelf and the game delayed 15 minutes as the visitors arrived in Windsor only 45 minutes before the scheduled puck drop due to inclement weather along the 401.  Instead with eight blueliners dressed including Ben Harpur and Mac Nichol who made up two-thirds of the team's fourth line, the visitors scored early and never let the foot off the gas in building a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Tyler Bertuzzi opened the scoring with his second of the season at the one minute mark.  Less than two minutes later the lead was doubled to 2-0 as another 16 year old, Hunter Garlent notched his seventh from Scott Kosmachuk and Patrick Watling.  After Justin Auger made it three rookie tallies in a row, Zack Mitchell chipped in with his team leading 22nd on the man advantage to stake Guelph to a 4-0 edge.

The lead stayed at four for much of the middle twenty with the Storm unable to convert on a pair of powerplays.  Finally after a nice move in the neutral zone by Andrey Pedan, Kosmachuk took the feed and after fanning on his initial attempt, the second year winger snapped his 18th past a fooled John Cullen to make it 5-0.  Only 53 seconds later, Frank Menard capped off the Storm offence as he went hard to the net and scooped up Mitchell's rebound before lifting it over Cullen.

With a six goal cushion heading into the third, the only thing left to decide was the shutout for Sparks.  Windsor hit the Storm goalie with seven shots but couldn't solve him as he racked up his second shutout in as many starts.  The last team to score against the Illinois native six days ago, the Spitfires forgot the secrets on Thursday in a solid performance by Sparks.

A rare Friday night away from the rink for Guelph before they hit the road for a Saturday night tilt in Barrie.  On Sunday afternoon, the Sarnia Sting visits the Sleeman Centre for a 2 pm start.
