Sometimes it’s the trades that don’t get made that make the difference.

When a deal that would have sent Guelph Storm forward Matt Sisca and Ben Chiarot to the Kingston Frontenacs for Taylor Doherty early in the season fell through, there was some disappointment in Storm circles.

These days everyone in Stormland is glad it fell through.

Sisca continued his red-hot ways for the Storm Thursday night with a two-goal, three-assist performance as Guelph downed the Sarnia Sting 7-4 at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Complex.

The five-point effort gives the 19-year-old Woodbridge native 15 points in his last eight games.

“The only streak I was on at the beginning of the year was a cold one,” Sisca said after Thursday’s win.

Sisca had only eight points in 22 games to start the season. Since then he has 47 points in 43 games.

He said one of the things that helped turn his season around was a sit down chat with coach/general manager Jason Brooks.

“I had a talk with Brooksy and he talked about why he traded for me and helped boost my confidence at time I was feeling pretty low,” Sisca said. “But mostly I just kept to my game and eventually things turned around.”

Brooks said the line of Sisca, Michael Latta and Peter Holland has been dominant of late.

“Sisca has been showing that moxy and offensive ability we knew he had when we traded for him,” said Brooks, who acquired SIsca from Niagara Falls last summer.

“He’s also been backchecking a lot better and his defensive game has really improved. I think that’s helped his offensive game.”

Thursday’s win over Sarnia moved the eighth-place Storm one point behind Erie and Saginaw with all three teams having two games left in the regular season.

Guelph plays Erie Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.
