Regular season ends with sixth straight win

Comment Below

With the playoffs looming the Storm were playing to move up the Western Conference standings and guaranteed themselves at least seventh with a 3-0 win over the Attack in Owen Sound.  For the second straight night, Brandon Foote was the game's first star earning his first shutout of the season, while the Storm penalty kill was a perfect nine for nine adding the winning goal for good measure.  The victory gives Guelph their sixth straight win to end the regular season.

While the victory leaves the Erie Otters in eighth, Guelph will have to wait until tomorrow to learn their first round opponent.  The Saginaw Spirit need a win to overtake the Storm and grab sixth in the conference when they play in Plymouth.

Despite spending nearly half of the first period in the penalty box, the Storm escaped the first period with a 0-0 tie.  Brandon Foote kicked out 13 shots in the Guelph goal while at the other end rookie Jordan Binnington was perfect on nine Storm attempts.

Past the halfway point of the contest, zeroes remained on the scoreboard for both clubs.  The Attack went to the man advantage with 9:26 remaining the second looking to open the scoring.  Instead it was the visitors that broke the deadlock with Peter Holland stepping across the blueline with the Owen Sound defence as a screen and using his quick release to snap it by Binnington.

Holland's shorthanded tally would hold up as the lone marker until he notched his second of the game and 30th of the season at 13:14 with another quick shot off the fly that Binnington couldn't handle.  With the goal, Holland joined Taylor Beck, Mathew Sisca and Michael Latta in the 30 goal club.  Late in the period, with the goalie on the bench in favour of the extra attacker, Guelph's Adam Comrie scored from deep in the Storm zone to dash any hopes of a comeback for the hosts.

Next week. the Storm opens their Western Conference Quarterfinal series on their road versus any one London or Kitchener.  The series shifts back to the Royal City for Game #2 on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm (London or Kitchener).  Round One Rush ticket promotion for the Storm's first round playoff series with all regular priced lower bowl tickets just $10.
