Kirsty Budd, Guelph Storm Staff
This summer GuelphStorm.com is catching up with the Storm’s latest prospects from across Ontario to find out a little bit more about them. We’re asking them everything from how they felt about being drafted to the Storm to what their summer plans are. Read on to learn more about the Storm’s potential next generation.
Scott Kosmachuk’s reaction after he learned he’d been drafted was shock.
“I was just sitting at my kitchen table and I couldn’t believe it was really happening, it was so exciting and a big step in my career.”
Kosmachuk started playing hockey simply because it was fun, he remembers not even knowing what the OHL was when he was younger. Now Kosmachuk not only knows what the OHL is, he’s also hungry to play in it.
This summer he’ll be following a hockey-specific training program, working on increasing his cardio and getting stronger as well as working on his stick handling and controlling the puck.
Kosmachuk also hopes to spend some time in cottage country with his old teammates from the Toronto Marlboros. “We were a really close team, we each had our own spot on the bench and it was the same lineup for every game, even away ones.”
When asked what he would bring to the Storm he notes his ability to contribute offensively. “I think my physical play and energy help me to put the puck in the net.”
Kosmachuk’s favourite NHLer is Jarome Iginla and he likes to model his game after Iginla’s toughness and his ability to contribute offensively.
The right winger counts Dan Brown, his coach of seven years as another source of inspiration. “He’s really helped me to come a long way. He always pushed me and has taught me a lot. It’s been hard sometimes but I know it’s because he wants me to be the best I can be.”
Kosmachuk wants to spend next season developing a lot in terms of strength and power as well as getting used to the speed of a faster-paced game.
“I’m happy that Guelph picked me, it’s a really good place to be. They’re a good organization and they have good people running it. I just have a good feeling about it.”
