By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury - Garret Sparks’ learning curve takes another turn Friday night.
The Guelph Storm goaltender will see his first ever playoff action when the Storm opens its best-of-seven conference quarter-final against the Plymouth Whalers at Compuware Arena.
He won’t be alone, as 12 other Storm players will be playing in their first playoff game at this level.
“I think the only difference with playoffs is that you play the same team a lot and you kind of build a hatred for one another,” Sparks said Thursday at practice.
“Plymouth is the kind of team that is going to give you a good, consistent series and every game is going to be a new challenge, but when you’re not expected to even get here, it’s good to be here and see what you can do as good a team as Plymouth is.”
Storm coach Scott Walker knows his team is for a tough time. Plymouth is bigger, more skilled and more experienced, with a combined 216 playoff games between them. Guelph has 118.
“We know we can beat them in one game, but can they beat them over seven games, when you get the real Plymouth Whalers,” Walker said.
