The Guelph Storm came out of the gate flying against the Oshawa Generals Friday night at the Sleeman Centre, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period then holding on for a 4-2 victory.
A season-high home crowd of 4,531 took in the game.
The Storm fired 22 shots at Gens netminder Kevin Bailie in the opening 20 minutes.
“That first period was probably the best first period I’ve seen by any team I’ve been involved with coaching,” Storm coach Scott Walker said. “Twenty two shots? That’s the most I’ve ever had as a coach.”
Zack Mitchell (pictured) was in on all three first period goals, scoring twice (including one shorthanded) and assisting on Matt Finn’s tally.
Mitchell’s hat trick was his second of the season and leaves him with a team-best 11 goals.
“We’re on a four-game losing streak and the coaches emphasized how important the first five minutes of the game are,” Mitchell said. “We just kept working hard and getting pucks behind their defence.
