For someone who has emerged as a star early in his NHL career, Drew Doughty could not help but arrive a little late for the Jarret Stoll Charity Golf Classic.

Doughty and his Los Angeles Kings teammate Wayne Simmonds didn't make it to Saskatoon on time for Thursday's autograph session and live auction in the two-day event, but both were there Friday morning -- with crowns on instead of bells -- to tee up in the Golf Classic at Moonlake Golf and Country Club. Proceeds from the event go to the Jarret Stoll Patient Comfort Endowment Fund for Children at Royal University Hospital.

Stoll is a native of Melville. He played AAA midget hockey for the Saskatoon Blazers and in the WHL with Edmonton and Kootenay. He is a centre in the NHL for Los Angeles.

"This is awesome," Doughty said. "Us hockey guys love getting together, having some fun and playing some golf. This is something for a great cause. It's raised a lot of money over the years. It just shows what kind of guy he (Stoll) is, how much he loves his community."

It has been a whirlwind week for Doughty, who attended the NHL awards night Wednesday in Las Vegas where he was one of three finalists for the Norris Trophy as top defenceman in the league. Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks won the award. Mike Green of the Washington Capitals, who is from the Saskatoon Blades, was the other finalist.

Doughty was a member of Canada's squad that won gold at the Olympics last winter.

"Lot of surprises happened to me," said Doughty, a native of London, Ont., and former member of the Ontario Hockey League's Guelph Storm.
