Some of the top draft eligible players for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft have congregated in Calgary for a four-day hockey camp that will be used to help select Canada’s Under-18 roster for the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament.

Carter Sandlak, a Guelph Storm forward, is one of the invitees to Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp, which started Saturday at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary.

On Saturday Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, opened its Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary.

Head coach George Burnett (Belleville, OHL), along with assistant coaches Ron Choules (Acadie-Bathurst, QMJHL) and Jim Hiller (-City, WHL), will lead the red and white teams through on-ice practices and three Red-White games. The camp wraps up on August 3.

At the conclusion of camp, the coaching staff, along with head scout Al Murray, will select a roster of 22 players to represent Canada at the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka from August 9-14 in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia. The final roster will be named the evening of August 3, and the team will depart for Europe the morning of August 4.

“The upcoming National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp will be competitive and exciting,” Murray said in a statement last month. “These players represent the future of Canadian hockey and are a testament to the strength of the Canadian Hockey League and the skill development taking place in minor hockey across the country.”

Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team is one of two men’s under-18 teams that Hockey Canada assembles during each season. A second men’s under-18 team will take part in the 2011 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Germany in April 2011, and will be comprised of available players not involved in playoffs with their respective teams.

The Ivan Hlinka entry will be trying to defend its gold medal from 2009. Canada beat Russia 9-2 in the under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka hockey tournament final last year for a second straight summer, and won the event for a fifth time in six years. Last year’s team feature a slew of players who were drafted this summer, including Tyler Seguin, Brandon Gormley, Jeff Skinner, Ryan Spooner, John McFarland, Erik Gudbranson and more.
